How Can You Learn to Speak Like a Native English Speaker

You don’t have an opportunity that you could live in a country where is English primary language. Also you don’t have an opportunity that you could live in environment where there are a lot of native English speaking people.

But.

You understand English language when you are reading an English book or when you are listening to an English movie or when you are listening to an English audio book.

How can you learn to speak English?

Idea is that you come as close as possible to ideal conditions. Some possibilities are presented in following sections.

Reading English books aloud

If you seldom speak English, then you will probably have difficulty correctly pronounce an English word.

How can you then read book aloud?

You can use a software application which can read electronic book aloud (aloud reader). Application for Android, e.g.: eReader Prestigio

How can such application help?

You read a text simultaneously with a aloud reader.

Set a reading speed on the aloud reader. If the reading speed is set too fast, you won’t be able to keep up with the aloud reader. At first you will probably configure the reading speed low and after some time you will increase the reading speed. Check also sound volume of the aloud reader or sound volume of your voice.

Compare your pronunciation with a pronunciation of the aloud reader. You can verify that you pronounce a word same as the aloud reader. In this case you will speak a little before as the aloud reader. You can learn the right pronunciation of words. In this case you will speak a little after as the aloud reader.

Select a book with a content which is close to the spoken English language. You can also try with a book that you are currently reading.

Listening audio books

You can’t┬áverify your pronunciation with the pronunciation of audio books. Also you can’t adjust the playback speed of audio books.

What can you do different?

Repeat the words after as you hear them. Speak the words aloud or silent.

Probably you listen to an audio book while you are doing something else. You have to focus on repeating words. It can have influence on other activities. For example, if you listen to an audio book while you run, you are not focused on yourself and on the surrounding area because you are focused on repeating words.

Stays comfortably in your ear when you are on the move.

Watching movies

If you have subtitles, watching movies is similar to reading books aloud. You only can’t adjust the playback speed of movie.

If you don’t have subtitles, watching movies is similar to listening to audio books.

What is different with watching movies?

  • Watching movies is closest to the talks taking place live.
  • Advice is not limited on watching movies. You can use this technique for watching cartoons or series.

Listening music

Listening music is hardest. You have to separate singer’s voice from rest of the music.

Why bother?

  • Music is most accessible.
  • It’s harder to hear a singer as reader. In conversation is required also skill of listening.
  • Song text is different as text in books or movies.

What if you can’t sing?

You don’t need to. Repeat the words without singing.
